it's midnight and I'm writing love letters
on my skin to the woman who raised me. it's midnight
and every limb has a story. all
my collarbone remembers is the frantic
hurry of your footsteps when it broke under the weight
of gravity and mistaken desire to fly and my
broken pink umbrella, long-gone, remembers too. my elbows
remember the firm pull of your hands in the grocery
store. my cheeks remember your makeup and
my clumsy fingers dipping in like paint pots and my neck
remembers all your strands of pearls. I remember
when you were young again and wearing
red and holding cups of tea in hands
that didn't shake yet and I remember hands that knew how
to peel apples, curling skins like red ribbons over
the edge of the blade, confident
in motion, and I remember your voice and I remember
your songs and I remember.

it's midnight and the water is cold and I
am somewhere beyond feeling. but
my love letters are only ink and they are washing
away and I watch them swirl at my feet and I
want you to know that you're going to god with
my love and my love and my love and my love and all
my love letters say the same thing to the woman
who is leaving me behind: I
am remembering you.
my grandmother is dying and she
hasn't recognised me for years. but I remember her,
even when she doesn't remember me.

God, take her with my love and my heart and my everything.
I give her to you with my blessings.

---

I can't say what I'm trying to say in this poem but I need to and I'm trying.

Amazing and well done.  my grandmother had Alzheimer's for well over 15 years.  She was the most confident, classy, well traveled person I have ever met & your poem brought that all back.  Thank you.

I keep coming back to this and it makes me cry every time. I don’t think I can do it justice – it’s beautiful, haunting and heartbreaking.

Beautiful poem. Haunting. Touching. Personal. Your imagery is incredible. The part about the shaking hands, the red ribbons of apple skin, and the swirling poems washing into the water are my favorites. Beautiful poem.

I feel for you, as I went through this with my mother. It does get easier, not better, but easier. Eventually. And I understand exactly what you are saying. And Thank you!

This is absolutely beautiful. I just. . .there are no words, hun. (My grandmother's been steadily losing her mind for a few years now; it started as organic brain and it's regressed into alzheimer's. The last two years it's gotten really bad. I started college six hours from home last year; I keep waiting for the break when I go home and she has no idea who I am anymore. I just. . .I'm crying right now. This poem was like a sucker-punch, but the good kind (if that makes any sense). Beautiful work.)

I only have my grandmother on my father's side of the family. I want to hold on to my "granny" as long as possible. I recently married and now my family is growing but I will never forget the ones who are gone now. I know they are in a better place because they feel no more pain or sorrow and that gives me comfort. Even though they are gone I still feel their love inside of me. I'm sorry to hear this and I'll remember you and your family in my prayers. BTW your poem is so beautiful!

what a beautiful tribute to your grandmother. i'm so sorry for the loss you and your family are about to incur. it's always difficult to lose someone you love but before she passes... read her your poem. that way she'll take it with her when she goes to see God. she'll hold it in her heart always...

don't ever stop writing because you have a gift for words. keep up the good work. have a great night~

Damn. If this isn't what you're truly trying to say, then the real message must be pretty intense. I think that you've conveyed your emotional state very well; it's sincere, and just unrefined enough to give it a very raw feeling.

You have my sympathies, I can tell you were very attached to your grandmother. All I can say is try to find a way to stay occupied; writing is definitely a good outlet for such problems, and you're good at it.

This is really touching since I lost a grandfather the way your losing your grandmother one day he reconises me and then the next time dosn't know who I am and then he has flashbacks of when he was in the war and then just to watch them slowly die is heartbreaking

I hate to sound like the twelve million comments before me, but I am on the vurge (virge? vurg? how do you spell it?) of tears.

Memories are sad, and lonely, when they're only shared by one.
And it hurts a lot when the other half of the memory dies, but
The memories will always be preserved in a special place;
your heart.

My aunt is dying and I dont know how to handle it...
I believe you explained the poem well enough to get your point across
How do you prepare for a death?

you don't, really. or if you do, I'm not sure that I know how. say goodbye. tell her you love her, that she has helped shape you into the person you are today, and that everything you do for the rest of your life reflects her presence in the world. and then live.

which is to say, I am so sorry for the loss you will experience and are already experiencing, because it's an ongoing process. prepare to be sad, and angry, and numb. breakdown and cry in the shower if you need to. it gets better with time, and even then, some days it will feel like the grief is only hours old and half a heartbeat away and the only way through it is to... grit your teeth and let yourself feel it and try to remember the good stuff. and you will remember, and you will get through it, and some days you'll feel so calm and assured and safe in her love and you'll know that somehow, some piece of her is there with you and it's enough.
