Literature Text

today is the day I called my mailman and told him
that I am alive. today is the day that dares me to be
thrilled, dares my fingertips to be intoxicated,
dares my toes to be ablaze with love, my lungs
to ache, my body so full of life that there
is no more room for air.

I have been in love with so many things and today
I will have them all. lawyers and world politicians agree;
tribesmen in Africa; the eskimos, who never meant
to teach us how to kiss. if this is not
the place, then where, if all we have is now.

this is how the day begins. we grow spots
and chase life down like a wildcat. we lap it up
with heavy tongues. we sharpen
our claws on the edge of the world and
we survive.
we shed old skins and drag tomorrow behind us to be won.

Edit: I have a huge problem with the second stanza. and the last part of the first. and everything but the third stanza, essentially. ideas?
